New initiative in Ulster to promote water polo for children

The Cathal Brugha club and Belfast City Council have entered into a new agreement to promote and develop water polo for children of primary school age
Starting next Tuesday(15thNov at 6-45.) in the learner pool at Andersonstown Leisure Centre six teams will compete for the newly presented Gerry O’Neill Cup.Three games will be played at each session using purpose built mini goalposts and special green coloured size 3 balls.
Rules to suit the venue and skill levels of the children will be of the common sense variety for what promises to be a fun and learning experience.
The clubs are entering into the spirit of the occasion by giving distinctive names to their teams with the Pirates,Sharks,Dolphins,Jets,Pirhanas and Squids all taking part in the five week long competition. The cup and participation certificates will be presented at a mini pre Christmas party after the fnal session on10th Dec.
In the New Year and leading up to Easter similar events will be tried at the pools in Falls and Grove with the Cup moving around each venue.
Gerry O’Neill who was surprised and flattered to learn that he was being honoured in this way described the initiative as “A tremedous boost for the sport at ground level and one that will have long term benefits”
